The Lower Schwarz presents two options for retention that are very helpful when first permanent molars are not erupted sufficiently to use the standard Adams or Delta Clasps. On the left first permanent molar, the use of a half Adams Clasp is an excellent choice when the distal marginal ridge is still covered with tissue and no distal-buccal undercut exists. A retentive “arrowhead” is placed (as usual) on the mesial of the tooth, while the remainder of the clasp is contoured around the distal of the tooth as a circumferential clasp. Thealternative clasp design for the right second primary molar is composed of a combination Ball Clasp and “C” Clasp. The Ball Clasp can be used to engage the interproximal undercut of either molar, while the “C” clasp is most effective when used in conjunction with a composite ledge placed just occlusal to the contact point of the clasp. Once the molar is lost, retention can still be maintained with the Ball Clasp.
