When a patient exhibits a V-shaped or Gothic arch form and is only narrow in the anterior region, an expansion appliance that expands equally in the posterior and anterior region would be contraindicated. To overcome this problem, a screw with a posterior hinge has been designed that allows you to gain anterior space without disturbing the posterior bite relationship. Since the expansion screw and the hinge are separate pieces, the palatal acrylic can be kept to a minimal thickness. This design is only effective for a limited amount of expansion (up to 4mm).
