Founded in 1957, Space Maintainers Laboratories (SML) was the brainchild of lab technician Bill Veis, who at the urgings of an orthodontic specialist sought to make his appliance manufacturing services available to all interceptive orthodontic professionals -- from the orthodontist to the general dentist.

Years later, the company sought to extend its potential for service beyond previously established boundaries. The expanded mission was to provide the dental professional with literally everything needed to successfully integrate appliance therapy into their practice – easily, economically and profitably.

TODAY, Space Maintainers Laboratories is known simply as SML, a lab-based consortium of core-supporting dental/orthodontic specialties, e.g. appliance manufacture, continuing education, diagnostic consultation, 3D imaging, products, supplies and professional support. Over the span of more than 57 years, SML has built a worldwide network renowned for providing dental practitioners with the opportunity to receive the caring and connection of a “mom-and-pop lab”…with the technological assets and resources of a multi-level, globally realized company.
