This Mouthguard is designed as a single unit and covers both the upper and lower dentition. As the name implies, it is used primarily by boxers or any other direct contact sport. The anterior breathing holes are made as large as possible without reducing the protection to the anterior teeth. Since this appliance is designed to protect the TMJ as well as the teeth, it is essential to provide a construction bite along with the models. The construction bite should not only open the vertical sufficiently to allow for breathing holes, it should also translate the lower arch forward slightly to compensate for mandibular flexion. If the bite is only opened vertically and the mandible is not adjusted slightly forward, it could possibly create a “glass jaw” syndrome for the Boxer.
