An anterior occlusal interference can lead to an underdeveloped pre-maxilla and retroclined maxillary anteriors that are locked lingually in crossbite to the lower anteriors. Left untreated over time, this pseudo Class III can become a permanent skeletal defect. The Han Appliance is an excellent tool for correcting this problem. It combines stability and anchorage (created by joining the posterior aspect of the maxilla and the entire mandibular arch) with the effectiveness of an anterior-developing sagittal. Turning the screws develops the pre-maxilla and tips the anteriors labially. Once the anterior segment is developed enough to create a positive overjet, the appliance can typically be replaced with a simple Hawley Retainer.
