During the early stages of adult dentition, second molars are often still erupting. When placing a Bonded R.P.E. during this time, you will typically want to leave the partially erupted second molars free of the occlusal acrylic. To control their vertical development, simply prescribe occlusal rests. These rests can be adjusted or removed at any time. Adding anterior lap springs resolves anterior crowding -- especially important when the anteriors are in an end-to-end or mild crossbite. The springs can be adjusted intraorally (with three-prong pliers). (Hint: Only apply bonding agent to the buccal and lingual surfaces. Do not apply the bonding agent to the occlusal surface. This makes the appliance difficult to remove.)
