When a tooth is missing in the posterior aspect of the arch, an interim bridge can be used to maintain space and stabilize the area without having to prepare the teeth. This technique is particularly useful if buccal/lingual walls of the teeth to be banded are subject to fracture. An example of this would be teeth with very large MOD alloys. In this case, the bands would act to hold them together. This particular appliance is designed with an adjustable buccal wire. A simple adjustment with a 139 bird-beak plier will allow you to gain a small amount of lost space or upright a tooth that has tipped slightly into the edentulous space.
